Bad Bender Board: More Real-World Failures

We've talked before about what separates a poor edge from a professional one. Here's more proof from the field — real installations where standard bender board just couldn't hold its line.

Example 1: Never Flush, Never Clean



This overhead shot tells the story clearly. The black edging separating the rock bed from the mulch and turf never quite sits flush — it wanders above and below grade along the same run, leaving an inconsistent, uneven line instead of a crisp transition. Once an edge loses that consistency, it's visible from every angle, not just up close.

Example 2: Buckling and Gapping



Here the edging has buckled along the curve, lifting away from the turf on one side and leaving debris caught underneath. Bender board relies on the surrounding soil and rock to hold its shape, and once that material shifts even slightly, the board has nothing keeping it in line. The result is a wavy, inconsistent border that undermines an otherwise clean lawn.

Example 3: Straight Runs Aren't Safe Either



It's not just curves that fail. This relatively straight run of bender board between turf and rock still sits proud of the surface, creating a visible ridge instead of a seamless transition. Compare it to the clean concrete edge running parallel to it in the same photo — that's the flush, finished look every edge should have, curve or straight line.

Why This Keeps Happening

In every one of these examples, the problem is the same: the edging was never mechanically anchored. It relies entirely on the material around it — soil, rock, mulch — to hold its position. That works for a little while. But foot traffic, seasonal ground movement, and simple settling are enough to throw it out of line, and once it moves, there's nothing bringing it back.
